I’d like to make just one statement in response to tonight’s conflict of how Karofsky’s storyline was handled by the writers:

Depression is not always chemical. It’s bothersome that people still blame chronic sadness on chemical imbalances. Personally, I feel this episode was not meant to deal with this kind of sadness, and that’s why they didn’t bring it up. Karofsky’s depression seems to be situation forced, brought upon him by the onslaught of hate, self loathing, and lack of support.

The other kind of depression that I personally identify with might be that chronic kind that is just there always, but the writers were not writing for us. They were writing for the teens in Minnesota who kill themselves in droves, because their community won’t accept them. For Trevor, for any of the other countless youths who felt suicide was the only option to deal with the glaring lack of acceptance of their sexuality. This was an “It Gets Better” episode, attacking societal issues. Not an episode dealing with chemical or chronic depressions that we feel are also problems. I think they’ll get to that issue, someday. It’s hard to cover all aspects of an issue in 40 minutes, don’t be so harsh.
